Worst beach house I've rented in over 30 years
This was a horrible experience and this house is a trainwreck and horribly overpriced once you realize what you are actually renting. The owner clearly couldn’t give a crap about how renters feel, and made that clear to us after we noted the various things below that were unacceptable. Also, if you inquire about this, and Island Realty contacts you, in particular Gavin Hodgson, run away, fast. They are disreputable and you will end up ripped off.
Short review : house was dirty, had multiple code violations, was unsafe, and was misrepresented. Privacy issues abound – one room has no door and isn’t a bedroom, and another has two doors and the stairs going through, so is a highly undesirable bedroom that is not fit for purpose. The master BR is a joke, with not even enough space for one person’s belongings. AVOID this place like the plague, and don’t even think about renting it through Island Realty, as they are completely useless and unresponsive. Their response to my complaint was that they’ll see if they can get the owner to address these issues for the next tenant. Did literally NOTHING to address any of my issues.
Read on if you really want to know just how awful this place is.
Code violations :
1) The interior steps to the downstairs do not have a handrail and have an inadequate headroom on the landing step to the first floor.
2) The middle deck is unsafe, falling apart with major gaps and exposed nails underneath. After realizing this days into the visit, no one felt safe using this deck or the outdoor dining area. Having eight people dine at the table on this deck probably risks its collapse.
3) The outdoor dining table on the middle deck is a fire hazard, as it blocks the walkway to the stairs, and forced people to duck so as to not hit their heads on the steps to the upper deck.
Master BR, w King bed :
Room barely fit the bed. No real dresser, and a small cubby for two people that doesn’t fit in the available space without blocking passage to the bed. Pictures did not show anything but the bed and side tables, so one would assume there is reasonable storage space, but what is there is completely inadequate for two adults. Why? Not only is there no real dresser, half of the closet is blocked off and unusable, as it is taken up by the shower in the adjacent bathroom. Yup.
Toilet rocks back and forth on the floor and the seat is not firmly attached. Toilet was also left dirty. Sink faucet was loose.
Downstairs Queen BR#1 :
Air conditioning unit is plugged into an extension cord and uses the only available plug in the room. No side tables for the bed.
Upstairs BR with two singles beds : this room is not fit for purpose and does not qualify as a true bedroom.
This “bedroom” is unsafe, as it opens onto the stairs with no available method of protection, so kids cannot use the room safely at night. So if you are thinking your two kids will sleep in the twin beds, think again. Also, the only means of getting to the kitchen from the downstairs is through this bedroom and up the steps. Who wants to sleep in a room that people walk through? Kids go to bed early, adults need to use the passage, totally doesn’t work.
This room was also not cleaned, was filthy under the beds, and had sand on floors. The closet was filthy and unusable, as it was filled with bed parts and dirty clothes from the previous guest. The AC unit was also plugged into extension cord.
Additional Room w Trundle : this room was also not fit for purpose and does not qualify as a sleeping area, unless you don’t care remotely about your privacy.
Pictures for the listing do not show that this room actually contains the washer and dryer. It also has no door, thus it’s not really a bedroom, and since it has a trundle, it’s not really suitable as a bedroom except by kids. The problem with that is that it wreaks of laundry detergent. So the room went unused, as it was deemed unusable.
Front porch, furniture condition :
Front porch table was actually broken, and upon first usage, tumbled over when one of the supports underneath it propping it up gave way. Previous tenant probably broke it but hid the damage, and we had to find out the hard way when it collapsed. Furniture was generally in poor condition, needed resanding and restaining. The chairs on porch were missing wood slats. The deck furniture upstairs was stained improperly, and most of the stain already peeled off of the surfaces. And the view of the ocean is hilarious, in that there is only one spot you can sit upstairs, on the edge of the bench, where you can see it.
Just don't rent this place. Save yourself the aggravation.
